New Home Away From Home
In 2018 APMA was hired to develop a master plan for the renovation of the Nebraska Union at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Driven by feedback from students who wanted a space that felt like a “home away from home”, the aspirations for this space were varied; from creating increased opportunity for social interaction through the design of informal lounge and recreation spaces, to identifying various types of study spaces for individual students and groups.

To better understand the needs and opportunities, the team conducted a series of surveys, listening sessions and design charrettes with administrators, students, building staff, and partners that currently use the Union for events and special occasions. The end result is a plan for a dynamic new space designed to be a beacon for the campus and offer better connections to the adjacent buildings.
